Technical Narrative Designer

Job Description

Techland is seeking an experienced Technical Narrative Designer to join our Narrative team. They will focus on creating, expanding and improving our narrative toolsets and systems. If you’re excited to explore, design, script and implement new narrative designs then we want to hear from you.

Please note, that this is a separate role from the Narrative Designer role. 

Responsibilities:

  • working with our Narrative and technical teams to design and develop new narrative systems from concept to implementation,
  • prototyping, scripting and building stories using Techland’s proprietary game engine,
  • maintaining and improving our existing toolsets and systems,
  • working with the Narrative team and other disciplines to advance our interactive storytelling techniques,
  • implementing, advancing, supporting and maintaining narrative content,
  • debugging technical issues in our narrative systems and content,
  • providing insightful and constructive feedback to writers, designers and our technical teams,
  • acting as a point of contact between the Narrative and technical teams,
  • creating and maintaining technical documentation relating to narrative tools and systems,
  • assisting the team in developing workflows and pipelines across the Narrative, Quest, Animation and technical teams.

Qualifications

  • relevant previous professional experience as a Narrative Designer, Level Designer or Gameplay Designer, with a focus on designing and implementing narrative content and/or systems,
  • experience working within engines such as Unreal, Unity or other popular game engines that support visual scripting.
  • knowledge of and experience with scripting languages and/or visual scripting tools. 
  • experience in creating design and technical documentation,
  • creative approach and understanding of the demands of interactive narrative, game design and visual storytelling techniques,
  • solid written and verbal communication skills. Must be proficient in English (B2+).

Nice to have:

Candidates lacking the skills/experience listed below should not be discouraged from applying. Please note that these elements may come up at the interview.

  • experience of working with proprietary engines would be a bonus,
  • prior experience in creating first- or third-person action games,
  • Other technical knowledge such as experience with programming languages (C#, C++ etc.)
  • an understanding of the demands and requirements of multiplayer games and openworld storytelling,
  • knowledge and experience with dialogue editing and management software such as Inkle, Twine,or Oasis.

Additional Information

Hiring Process:

  • candidates must submit a CV + portfolio demonstrating their best work
  • design examples should be supplied as documents or spreadsheets. If possible, please provide a variety of examples i.e. that illustrate different approaches to narrative design,
  • playable  interactive samples may be submitted, but  if included must form only part of the submission,
  • samples should demonstrate your ability to construct a branching, non-linear story, or interactive story. Additionally, a demonstration of how you create narrative mechanics is a plus,
  • all written samples should be supplied in English,
  • selected candidates will be asked to take part in an online interview process.
  • if progressed, selected candidates may be asked to complete a test. The test will take no longer than four hours in total, and candidates will have a week to submit it.
