On top of continuously growing the world of Dying Light through a robust post-launch support plan for Dying Light 2 Stay Human, we're also working on an unannounced AAA Open World Action RPG set in a brand new fantasy universe; our biggest project to date.

Job Description

Techland is seeking a Junior Writer to join our Narrative team in creating exciting, action-driven stories. From branching dialogue to barks; cinematics to environmental storytelling; with the support of the Narrative team, you will assist in finding and delivering the best ways to tell our tales in an interactive way. 

Responsibilities:

  • actively participating in the online writing room to create compelling stories, deep world-building, memorable characters and meaningful themes,
  • delivering narrative by writing scripted and systemic dialogue, cutscenes, barks and text as well as by using in-game and interactive storytelling techniques,
  • setting up conversation structures and variables, input script and collate script data,
  • assisting in creating and maintaining narrative documents for the wider team,
  • working in close collaboration with other disciplines to develop and deliver the game narrative, and to support its implementation,
  • attending voice recording and mocap sessions online or in person when needed,
  • assisting with any marketing and/or PR needs that require writing,
  • willing to undertake relevant, company funded skills training.

Qualifications

  • whilst professional experience is not required for this role, applicants must be able to provide samples of their own writing, 
  • writing qualifications/courses are not required, but will be taken into consideration (so please list any courses you have attended/taken part in),
  • applicants will benefit from having done some self-study e.g. online materials, reading of books on writing/interactive writing,
  • credits/experience in writing for other media or work in other game-development roles are very welcomed, but alongside this experience, such applicants must also demonstrate their knowledge of and passion for interactive writing,
  • solid written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in English (C1+).
  • A collaborative approach to stories.

Please note, candidates lacking these elements should not be discouraged from applying. Be aware that these areas may be discussed at the interview stage.

  • any amateur, student, or other narrative experience from acting to scriptwriting,
  • any amateur, student, or other experience making your own games and/or mods,
  • writing qualifications will be taken into consideration, but are not required for this role,
  • a knowledge of first or third person action games,
  • knowledge and experience with dialogue editing and management software such as Inkle, Twine, or Oasis.
  • familiarity with software such as MS Word, Excel, Google Sheets, Jira, Confluence and/or other industry word processing and management software.

Additional Information

Hiring Process:

  • candidates must submit a CV + portfolio demonstrating their best work,
  • script examples as documents,or spreadsheets are required. If possible, please provide a mix of scenes (could be cutscenes/plays, or TV), scripted triggers (in-game dialogue elements, branching conversations etc) and barks,
  • please note, interactive samples (e.g. Twine) may be submitted, but, if included must form only part of the submission,
  • sections of prose can be submitted as part of the samples, but please note that this is a scriptwriting position and so, to be considered, portfolios must contain examples of scriptwriting,
  • samples should demonstrate your ability to construct a branching, non-linear story, or dialogue,
  • samples should add up to no more than twenty pages (excluding playable submissions),
  • all samples should be supplied in English,
  • selected candidates will be asked to take part in an online interview process,
  • if progressed, selected candidates may be asked to complete a test. The test should be completed within a week and is designed to take no longer than 4 hours in total.
